Sharers and competitors

by Pari My mind is a big ol' pile of mush right now. It's good mush, steaming on the plate with a dollop of butter and a splash of B-grade maple syrup. The Novelists, Inc. conference in New York blew me away. I'm still processing. My brain hurts from the massive effort. It's astoundingly powerful to hang out with a group of novelists where the average member has had sixteen published books. You know I'm on the low end with three. Think of how many were on the high end. I went to the confe

Paul Krugman: Grains Gone Wild

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 00:36:00 PDT
Can anything be done to alleviate the food crisis?: Grains Gone Wild, by Paul Krugman, Commentary, NY Times: These days you hear a lot about the world financial crisis. But there’s another world crisis under way — and it’s hurting a lot more people. I’m talking about the food crisis. Over the past few years the prices of wheat, corn, rice and other basic foodstuffs have doubled or tripled, with much of the increase taking place just in the last few months. High food prices dismay even rel

Head In The Clouds - Looking West

The main buildings you can see here are the old Co-op department store, which now houses several restaurants and a casino. The building has recently been redeveloped after standing unloved for a few years after the Co-op closed down. This was due to a change in shopping trends and more up to date shops opening. The big black glass building is known as the IBM building, as the computer company has an office there, although it holds a few others as well. I worked there about 20 years ago for an

Retro Styling Sunglasses: Eye love this season

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 01:00:14 PDT
Unlike clothing and hair trends that change from season to season, sunglasses styles seldom undergo any major seasonal changes. I mean look at the Rayban Wayfarers and Aviators that are still seen on tonnes of celebs from LA to London (The Olsens, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller to name but a few). But that doesn’t mean you can get away with just any old style this summer season. Selecting the right pair of retro-style sunglasses is crucial. Thick, plastic frames harking back to the 1970s are ma

Ah, yes, my favorite addiction, the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll. Oh great flimsy barometer of the political landscape, what can you tell me this time? I just wanted to take a quick moment to look at yesterday’s daily tracker because I find two things that are interesting. First, Hillary vs. Obama: This gives us fifteen days straight with Obama on top either with a significant, or a statistically insignificant lead. The only other two stretches that go this long or longer occurred back b

Is the USA Alliance still good for Australia

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 01:18:16 PDT
Is the USA Alliance still good for Australia By Reece Pocock, This week Australians have witnessed our new Prime Minister, Australian Prime Minister,, swanning around Washington. Our newspapers and TV screens have been full of self-satisfied grinning faces of Rudd with Bush, and the three presidential candidates. Australian Prime Minister It seems that once elected Australian Prime Ministers head for Washington to establish their credentials with the US Government. Remember Bush called Howar

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 01:21:03 PDT
On April 2, the American Electronics Association (AeA) released 148 page report on high tech employment trends in the U.S. called Cyberstates 2008: A Complete State-by-State Overview of the High-Technology Industry. The report showed that the overall number of high tech jobs in the U.S. increased by 91,400 (1.6%) to 5.9 million during 2007, and that all but four states increased high tech jobs. However, the 91,400 for 2007 was less than the 139,00 high tech jobs that the U.S. added in 2006. Th

Respond to Rubel: Word of Mouth and the Tipping Point

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 01:27:41 PDT
The past five years have been marked with “social” and “viral” buzzwords about how to best do marketing and advertising. We’ve been hearing everything from “Tipping Point” and”Mavens” to lots of mentions of “influencer” and “A-List Bloggers”. Yet, the increasingly popularity of these terms also breeds confusion. That’s how I feel about Steve Rubel’s latest posting called “Trust in Peers Trumps the ‘A-List,” Study Finds’“. In it Steve Rubel writes: There’s an ongoing debate online and in mar
